Railroader’s next major update — Maintenance of Way (MoW) — is scheduled to roll out to the opt-in Steam Experimental branch on October 27, 2026. The date was confirmed by the development team in its September 2026 Development Update posted on September 29, 2026: “We plan to release the update to an Experimental branch on October 27th!”
At a Glance
- The Maintenance of Way (MoW) update is scheduled for the opt-in Experimental branch on Steam on October 27, 2026, announced in the September 29, 2026 dev update.
- MoW makes track wear with traffic: maintenance work cars restore it, while vegetation and speed restrictions pile up in the meantime.
- The update also ships physics and Auto Engineer reworks, and sets the stage for modding, with equipment customization and map editor features previewed alongside it.
What’s in the Maintenance of Way update
MoW is the headline system: track now wears as trains run over it and has to be maintained. From the team’s feature list:
- Track wear with traffic — track must be maintained to stay healthy.
- Construction milestones built with MoW work cars — maintenance tasks are tied to dedicated rolling stock.
- Vegetation crowds the track as time since the last maintenance grows.
- Temporary speed restriction boards appear on worn track.
- New Construction Difficulty and Track Wear settings let players tune how demanding the system is.
Alongside MoW, the update reworks simulation and train handling: a rewritten coupling solver for improved slack action, tonnage ratings in the HUD, purchase screen and placer, a rewritten diesel-electric simulation, an overhauled steam cutoff and tractive effort model, more realistic coal consumption and gradual handbrakes. The Auto Engineer gets rebuilt train handling — stops within about a meter, improved brake handling on steep grades and stall detection.
Modding, map editing and equipment customization
The Experimental branch release is also the starting point for the update’s modding work. The team previewed equipment customization and map editor features in the announcement video, and says it is spending the run-up to October 27 “gearing up to support all of the new modding features, as well as preparing resources and documentation.”
Because the release targets an Experimental (pre-release) branch, expect follow-up patches and documentation drops after launch rather than a single final release.
Release date and what happens next
In short: Railroader MOW update release date is October 27, 2026, on the opt-in Steam Experimental branch, per the September 29, 2026 announcement.
