Railroader March 2026 Development Update: MoW Testing, a New Wages System, and a Save Overhaul

Railroader’s March 2026 dev update reports strong progress on the MoW update, including a new wages system for …

Railroader’s March 2026 development update struck an optimistic tone: the beginning of the year had been “particularly productive,” even though the team cautioned there was still more to do before the Maintenance of Way (MoW) update was ready for an experimental release.

At a glance

  • The team is testing and refining Maintenance of Way ahead of its experimental release.
  • A new wages system now covers Auto Engineer crews and MoW work crews.
  • A redesigned save system groups saves by railroad, cleaning up the Load Game screen.
  • A car styles system ties a car’s color to its reporting mark — and modders can define these styles.

Maintenance of Way is taking shape

MoW remains the centerpiece of Railroader’s next chapter. The March update confirmed the team is actively testing and refining Maintenance of Way, the system that makes track wear with traffic and introduces dedicated maintenance work cars. The goal, the developers stressed, is to “get this next update right” — which is why the longer timeline is intentional rather than a slip.

A new wages system for crews

Two crew types are getting deeper simulation: the Auto Engineer crews that help run your railroad and the MoW work crews that maintain it. A new wages system now models pay for both, giving the economic side of running a railroad more texture as the MoW update approaches.

Save system rebuilt around your railroad

Anyone with a long Railroader save history will welcome this one: the save system has been redesigned to group saves by railroad. The practical benefit is immediate — no more autosaves cluttering up your Load Game screen. Saves are now organized the way players actually think about their railroads.

Car styles: color follows the reporting mark

The car styles system is a quiet but important change for both players and modders. Previously, when a car arrived at an interchange it would receive an independently selected random color and reporting mark. Now the color is informed by the reporting mark, so liveries stay consistent and believable. Modders will be able to define these styles too, feeding directly into the official modding support on the roadmap.

More MoW material sources and refreshed buildings

Two further items rounded out the update:

  • An on-line ballast and concrete source/customer was added as an additional supply for your MoW material needs.
  • The team is updating older building models and adding new ones, steadily refreshing the look of the railroad.

The new wages system for Auto Engineer crews and MoW work crews sounds like it will finally make the economy matter. Curious how pay scales with train length.

Thank you for the redesigned save system grouped by railroad. My Load Game screen was a mess of autosaves. Big quality-of-life win for Railroader.

Car styles where the color follows the reporting mark is such a nice touch. Modders defining styles will make Railroader screenshots look so much cleaner.
