Final Fantasy VII Revelation Preview — Release Date, Platforms, Story and Gameplay

by PlayFox

Square Enix closed out Summer Game Fest 2026 with the one announcement Final Fantasy fans had been waiting for: Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project. Slated for April 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, it arrives as the culmination of a trilogy that began with Remake (2020) and continued with Rebirth (2024). This is our first-look preview, built entirely from the details Square Enix and the developers have confirmed so far.

What Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation?

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is an action role-playing game with an open world, developed by Square Enix Creative Studio I and published by Square Enix. It reimagines the closing act of the 1997 original Final Fantasy VII, picking up directly after Rebirth. Where the previous two entries reworked the Midgar and Gaia arcs, Revelation pushes the story to its conclusion: the march on the Northern Crater, the awakening of the planet’s defensive Weapons, and the final confrontation with Sephiroth to stop Meteor.

The creative leadership is the same team that carried the remake project: director Naoki Hamaguchi alongside Tetsuya Nomura and Motomu Toriyama, produced by Yoshinori Kitase, with series writer Kazushige Nojima handling the script. The game runs on a modified Unreal Engine 4.

Story: The Remake Trilogy’s Finale

The central theme is described as “choice and resolve.” Cloud Strife and AVALANCHE move toward the Northern Crater as Shinra’s grip tightens and the Weapons — the planet’s immune response — begin to stir. Locations that the remake project skipped in earlier entries return here: the frozen Great Glacier, the occupied nation of Wutai, and Rocket Town. For longtime fans, the return of Wutai and Rocket Town is one of the more exciting structural promises of Revelation, since both were condensed or omitted in Rebirth.

Gameplay: Open World, the Highwind, and the FITS System

The combat carries forward the real-time action-plus-strategy hybrid of the previous games, but Revelation opens the format up into a true open world for the first time in the trilogy.

The Highwind Airship and Skydiving

The party’s airship, the Highwind, becomes a free-travel hub. Players can fly it across the map and, for the first time, skydive out of it to drop onto locations below — a traversal beat that turns the airship from a menu option into a playground. Underwater submarine sections and new Chocobo mechanics round out the exploration loop.

The FITS System (Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear)

The headline new mechanic is FITS — Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear — designed by combat director Teruki Endo. Characters equip special garments that change their appearance and grant abilities borrowed from classic Final Fantasy job classes such as Warrior and Black Mage. It is effectively a light job-system layer on top of the action combat, letting you reshape a character’s toolkit without leaving the real-time flow.

Queen’s Blood and New Minigames

The card game Queen’s Blood returns expanded from its Rebirth debut, and the rearranged story adds new minigames adapted from original-game events, including Great Glacier skiing. The minigame suite has been a fan-favorite differentiator of the remake project, and Revelation appears to lean into it harder than before.

New Playable Characters: Cid and Vincent

Two long-teased party members become properly playable here. Cid Highwind joins with his signature spear, piloting the Highwind, while Vincent Valentine brings his firearms and his beast transformation form — a mechanic that should give the combat roster one of its more distinct playstyles. The core returning party (Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie, Cid, Vincent and Cait Sith) is intact.

The Creative Team Behind It

Few JRPG finales arrive with this much continuity at the top. With Kitase producing, Nojima writing, and Nomura directing alongside Hamaguchi, Revelation is the clearest expression yet of the remake project’s original creative intent. Voice casting notes one change: Sephiroth is voiced by Travis Willingham in English, taking over from Tyler Hoechlin, with Toshiyuki Morikawa returning in Japanese.

DLC and Post-Launch Plans

Square Enix has already outlined a Story Expansion Pass spanning 2027–2028, with a Sephiroth-focused chapter and a Vincent/Turks story arc (the Turks being a DLC narrative focus). Zack Fair also appears as a collectible-edition statue character, signaling the devs’ awareness of the fanbase’s attachment to the expanded Compilation of Final Fantasy VII lore.

First-Look Verdict (Pending)

Because Revelation does not release until April 8, 2027, this is a preview, not a scored review — we have not played a finished build. What Square Enix has shown is encouraging: a unified creative team, a genuine open world, the crowd-pleasing return of Wutai and Rocket Town, and a combat layer (FITS) that adds depth without burying the action. We will assign a final score once we have hands-on time near launch. If you want broader context on the series’ strengths, our Final Fantasy XII review covers why the franchise’s RPG design has aged so well, and the reviews hub collects every score on PlayFox. The FITS system is the feature I keep coming back to in my head. Turning the job-class fantasy into a suit you equip mid-fight without dropping out of real-time combat is exactly the kind of depth the remake project was missing. If they balance the Warrior and Black Mage loadouts well, this could have the best build variety in the whole trilogy.

Wutai and Rocket Town finally back in the story is the headline for me. Those locations got squeezed out of Rebirth, so seeing the remake project actually commit to them in Final Fantasy VII Revelation makes the 'finale' feel earned. April 8, 2027 cannot get here fast enough.

Cid and Vincent becoming properly playable, plus the Highwind letting you skydive onto the open world, is the most exciting traversal pitch Square Enix has shown in years. The Northern Crater march with the Weapons waking up sounds like the perfect send-off for Cloud and AVALANCHE.
