Planet Zoo 2 opened its gates on October 13, 2026, and Frontier Developments has already shipped its first post-launch update — a bug-fix pass arriving within days of release, with the studio signalling that more is on the way.

Early reviews have been strong. GameSpew called it “the best simulation game from Frontier yet,” praising its visuals and depth, while Push Square’s PS5 review framed it as a natural successor to the 2024 Console Edition and a close cousin of Planet Coaster 2.

With 130+ animals to collect and systems layered on systems, though, new players can drown quickly. Here is both the patch news and a practical way in.

What the First Patch Addresses

Frontier has said it wants to focus on a handful of key issues in upcoming updates, including a variety of strange bugs reported since launch. The first patch is squarely a stability and bug-fixing release rather than a content drop — which is the right priority for a management sim this complex.

Expect further updates on a similar cadence. Frontier’s track record with Planet Coaster 2 and Jurassic World Evolution suggests steady post-launch support.

Beginner’s Guide: Your First Two Hours

1. Pick the Right Mode

Planet Zoo 2 ships with several game modes, and the one you choose first genuinely changes the experience. Franchise mode is the full management sandbox — finances, research, breeding, staff. Sandbox removes money and unlocks everything, which is the better option if you want to learn the building tools before worrying about profit.

If this is your first zoo game, start in Sandbox for an hour, then move to Franchise once the controls feel natural.

2. Learn the Research System Early

Research is the spine of progression. There are multiple topic types, and investing early compounds — better animal welfare unlocks better habitat items, which drives donations, which funds more research. Do not neglect it in favour of buying more animals; a zoo full of unhappy animals in bare enclosures loses money.

3. Build Loops, Not Corridors

The single most common new-player mistake is a long dead-end path. Guests walk in, see three exhibits, and walk back out — and their tiredness and hunger go unserved.

Build a loop instead, so guests circulate past shops and facilities repeatedly. Leave room to expand outward from that loop rather than boxing yourself in. Themed districts work better than one giant habitat blob.

4. Use Photo Mode

Photo Mode is new to Planet Zoo 2 and is not just a toy. It is genuinely useful for inspecting your park from angles the management camera will not give you — spotting a path bottleneck or a sightline problem is much easier when you can fly the camera around freely.

5. Do Not Buy Every Animal Immediately

With 130+ species available, the temptation is to fill the zoo fast. Resist it. Each animal carries welfare, habitat and food costs, and a smaller number of thriving exhibits outperforms a crowded, failing menagerie.

Verdict

Planet Zoo 2 is the most detailed zoo simulator Frontier has built, and the first patch suggests the studio is paying attention. If you bounced off the original’s complexity, Sandbox mode plus the new Photo Mode makes this a much friendlier entry point.
