Grand Theft Auto VI is three weeks out, and Rockstar Games just handed fans the most substantial world details since the trailers. Across a new Edge Magazine feature and a slate of companion reports, we now know how GTA 6’s open world is structured, how large it really is, and what a fresh batch of screenshots reveals about daily life in Leonida.

The Map Opens Early — and Stays Open

The biggest relief for players is structural. According to IGN’s Cade Onder, reporting on an Edge preview relayed by the GTA VI O’Clock podcast, GTA 6’s world will not be blocked off by story progression. The state of Leonida “will open up relatively early on” — closer to GTA 5’s post-intro freedom than GTA 4’s police-barrier linearity. If you want to head to the top of the map right after the tutorial, you can.

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut added a detail that doubles as a brag: the team is still discovering new locations in Leonida even this close to launch. That is possible because the world is, in his words, built with “an order of magnitude more interiors” than other Rockstar titles — and every one is handcrafted.

How Big Is Leonida, Really?

Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw reports the official comparison straight from the Edge feature: GTA 6’s map is just about twice the size of GTA 5. Even more striking, Rockstar says the game’s total land area is nearly as large as the playable areas of GTA 4, GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.

Garbut framed the design philosophy plainly: “You can go anywhere, any random location, and so many people have thought about that location.” The takeaway is density, not just square footage — Rockstar is betting that a smaller-feeling-but-denser Leonida beats a sprawling empty one.

12 New Screenshots Show Life Across Leonida

Rockstar and Edge released 12 new gameplay screenshots (the report notes “all 14” including prior shots) that paint a livelier picture than any trailer beat. They showcase:

  • Everyday life across the fictional state of Leonida.
  • A wide cast of populated characters going about their routines.
  • Jason and Lucia in several different outfits and looks.
  • First-ever looks at the regions of Grassrivers and Ambrosia.
  • What the report calls “clear attention to detail on the characters.”

With launch only weeks away, analysts quoted by Insider Gaming expect GTA 6 to post $3–5 billion in first-week revenue — a figure constrained more by console install bases than by demand.

A Strange New Gameplay Moment Appeared on South Park

In a move only GTA could pull off, a previously unseen gameplay clip surfaced inside the South Park episode “South Park America” (Comedy Central, the night of October 28). The sequence shows a dog relieving itself on a beach, an NPC moving to clean it up, and the player — controlling Jason — tossing something, then picking up the mess and smacking the NPC with it.

It is not a systems reveal, but it is unmistakably GTA’s gross-out humor. Crucially, Rockstar Games is thanked in the episode’s credits, which puts the “is this real?” debate to bed.

What’s Locked for November 19

None of this moves the fundamentals:

  • Release date: November 19, 2026
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
  • Setting: Modern-day Leonida, Vice City and beyond
