Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI lands on November 19, 2026, and the industry’s forecasts now read like a single line item built around it. Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report 2026 puts the year at $213.9 billion in consumer spending, up 6.1% year over year — and its console numbers only work if Rockstar’s blockbuster ships.

The 2026 Forecast

Platform2026 revenueGrowthShare of market
Mobile$121.1bn+6.8%57%
Console$46.9bn+5.1%22%
PC$45.9bn+5.3%21%
Total$213.9bn+6.1%100%

Two other figures matter more than the headline: full-game spending is forecast to rise 17.5%, which Newzoo calls “the strongest growth of any business model,” and 52% of all consumer spending is expected to come from China and the US. The global player base reaches 3.7 billion in 2026 (+4.4%), but penetration only creeps from 61.5% to 62.0% — the growth engine is spending per player, not new players.

Without GTA 6, Console Goes Nowhere

Newzoo’s director of market intelligence Emmanuel “Manu” Rosier told GamesIndustry.biz at Gamescom that the console market is being held up by exactly two things: Nintendo Switch 2 and GTA 6.

“There are two drivers that are explaining the current and future performance of consoles: Switch 2 and, obviously, the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 this year, which is going to drive the market up. If in 2026, let’s say Grand Theft Auto 6 wasn’t coming out, then you would have a platform going down year-on-year.”

Rosier was equally blunt about the second-order effect: the launch is “going to be cannibalistic to some other games,” which is why so many publishers cleared their dates out of November.

The “Attention Buzz Saw”

Cloud Imperium moved Squadron 42 to Q2 2027 with unusual candor. CEO Chris Roberts wrote that after twelve years of work he had no interest in launching “into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6.”

“Pretty much all outlets and most content creators will be all over it, not leaving a lot of room for other coverage,” he added — even though GTA 6 is a console-only launch this November. Cloud Imperium will preview the game to a small group of backers and creators on October 9 and 10, with a firm date to follow.

Newzoo’s own forecast already assumes the spillover: 2027’s numbers include the PC launch of GTA 6, which Rosier called “a big driver” of next year.

Price, Not Just Units

On pricing, Rosier said “the price elasticity is very low, because there is only one GTA 6.” His read of the knock-on effect: when a publisher at the top raises prices, it lifts the market — “the indie game became $30 rather than $20.”

That is the practical takeaway for smaller teams. GTA 6 will not just take playtime in November; it will set the reference price point for everything that ships after it.

What to Watch

  • November 19 — GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a retail disc that is really a download code.
  • October 9–10 — Squadron 42 previews, ahead of a concrete 2027 date.
  • 2027 — PC version of GTA 6, already baked into next year’s console-versus-PC forecast.
